Bill Barnfield
Every office needs its grumpy old man but despite appearances Bill is actually a fourteen year old train spotter who belongs on York station Platform 9 when steam was supreme. He’s also into model railways and watches Rochdale Football club often. Most Monday nights he goes along to a creative writing group, partly for literary stimulation and partly because it’s in a pub. He has a very nice wife, Jenny, and a grown up son with two rampaging toddlers. He once sold tea and butties on trains but one day took trolley to Grantham instead of Crewe. Hopes in his lifetime to see a politically incorrect world with less rules, less cars and more trains.
- Life before Liberty:
-
When Bill switched from life department to pensions at Friends Provident in 1974 he was immediately happy and has been in pensions ever since. He has had a career-long love affair with Final Salary, but was introduced to Small Self Administered Schemes in the 80s at Scottish Provident, along with a motley selection of Group Personal Pensions and countless Executive Plans, before moving on to Rea Brothers (bought out by James Hay) to do scheme wind-ups.
In 1999, still glad to be dealing with Final Salary benefits, Bill went self employed dealing with the Pension Review and some final salary administration for financial advisors and a couple of small actuarial firms. He was also a trustee in the closure of some small money purchase schemes.
He then landed an administration job on a substantial final salary scheme wind-up before moving on to Self Invested Personal Pensions and in particular SIPP UK property purchases for a newly established SIPP firm. Driven by his new love, Microsoft Excel, he got deeply into the maths of funding for property investments.
